Message to School Governors and Headteachers

Whether your school is an independent, an academy, a grant-maintained or a LEA school, you have a responsibility to provide a healthy and safe environment for your teachers, students, other employees and visitors.

This includes regular checks or audits of your current policies, risk assessments and systems.

The Health and Safety regulations for schools (and in general) are in the process of being relaxed and new guidelines were issued in 2012 to reduce some of the perceived procedures and paperwork for school activities.

Did you know that you can now have a agreement just once a year for parents to allow their children to undertake normal day-today activities whether inside or outside the standard school premises? Also that a generic risk assessment can cover many of the day-today activities without needing to be visited every time unless there has been a change in circumstances.

However, your school still needs to regular checks to see whether the system is being adhered to and that the correct procedures and systems are in place. The recommendation is that your school is audited at least one every two years and preferably each year.
